Russia accuses the US of supporting a bioweapons program in Ukraine

Russia today accused the United States of funding a bioweapons program in Ukraine.

Igor Konashenkov, a spokesman for the Russian defense ministry, said that "the aim of this and other Pentagon-funded bioresearch in Ukraine is to create a mechanism for the covert dissemination of lethal pathogens".

Konashenkov claimed that the ministry had documents detailing US military-biological activities in Ukraine, including the transfer of biological material from Ukrainians abroad.

According to him, Washington planned to research pathogens of birds, bats, and reptiles, as well as on African swine fever and anthrax. "Biological laboratories set up and funded in Ukraine carried out experiments on samples of the bat coronavirus," the defense ministry spokesman claimed.

Both Washington and Kyiv deny the existence of laboratories for biological weapons production in Ukraine.

White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said last night that they had noticed the spread of Russian falsehoods and that Chinese officials were amplifying such conspiracy theories.
